How to Make Water Candles

To make these candles, start by pouring water into a glass jar. Add a few small pieces of plastic tubing to the water. Then place a decorative item inside the jar. Finally, insert a long piece of plastic tubing through the hole at the top of the jar.

Steps To Make Water Candles

Water candles are incredibly easy to make, and they look really cool! Try making some yourself in this way:

Making The Wick

You can use any type of candle wick, including waxed wicks, cotton wicks, and floating wicks. However, if you want to make a candle that floats, you'll need to use a floating wick.

To make a floating wick:

  1. Take a new birthday candle and remove the wick.
  2. Put the wick in a bowl of oil.
  3. Let the wick soak in the oil for two minutes.
  4. Pull the wick out of the oil and wipe off the excess oil.
  5. Cut a circle out of a clear plastic container.
  6. Poke a hole in the center of the circle.
  7. Cut a slit along the edge of the hole.
  8. Slide the wick through the hole and into the slit.
  9. Push the wick down until it reaches the bottom of the plastic container.
  10. Remove the wick from the container with decoration material and water.
  11. Repeat steps 5–10 with another wick.
  12. Add the second wick to the first wick.
  13. Light the wicks.

Assembling The Candle

You'll need to pour in the oil until it reaches the desired depth. Then, place the wick on top. Make sure that the long end of the wick sticks out of the oil and the short end is submerged. If the bottom of your wick touches the water, add a small amount of oil to prevent this from happening.

Once you've poured in the oil, you should leave about 1 inch (2.54cm) of space at the very top of the jar. This will give you plenty of room for the wax to rise. If you don't leave enough space, the wax may not reach the top of the jar, causing the free-standing candle to drip down onto the floor.

To determine how much oil you need, measure the width of your candle glass jar. Then multiply that number by two-thirds. For example, if your jar measures 4 inches wide, you will need 8 tablespoons (120ml) of oil.

Place the wick on top and let the candle sit overnight. Once the candle burns through the entire length of the wick, remove it from the jar. Let the candle cool completely before using it.

Now that you've made your first batch of homemade candles, try making some variations. Try adding essential oils to the mixture, or experiment with different types of oils such as cooking oil, lamp oil, vegetable oil, etc.

Assembling The Candle

You can even dye the water with food coloring to change the color of your base candle.

If you want to keep your candle burning longer, you can dip the wick in melted paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is available at most hardware stores. Dip the wick in the realistic candle wax, then insert it back into the jar with water.

Be careful not to touch the hot wax directly with your hands. Instead, use tongs or gloves to hold the wick. After dipping the wick, wait 24 hours before lighting the classic candle again. After that, you can light the candle with care whenever you'd like.

Using The Candle

Candles come in many shapes and sizes, including tea lights, pillar candles, votives, tapers, etc. Candles are used for many purposes, including decoration, lighting, and scented oils.

There are several different types of candles available, including soy wax, paraffin wax, beeswax, and natural plant wax.

Using The Candle

Some candles are made specifically for decorating, while others are meant to be lit. Decorative candles are typically small and inexpensive. These beautiful candles are usually made of soy wax, which is safe for children and pets. However, decorative candles are not recommended for cooking because they contain chemicals that can cause cancer.

To keep your candles safe, place them somewhere that is cool and dark. Don't leave them in direct sunlight or next to heating devices. Maintaining water and oil levels is very important.

Every time you use the candle you should check the water and oil layers. If the oil layer is getting too low, then add more water. If it's too high, then remove some of the water.

If you want to reduce smoke, then trim the wick to 1/8 to 1/4 inch (0.3 to 0.6 cm). This will prevent the wick from touching the water.

Make sure that you extinguish the candle before leaving your room or add more oil to the glass container for the candle. Otherwise, you might spill the hot oil.

Floating candles are safe to use in any setting. However, if you plan on using them in a swimming pool, please note that the wicks must never get wet. If the wick becomes soaked, it will absorb water which will cause the candle to burn unevenly and shorten its life span.

To avoid getting the wick wet, hold the candle by the wick and carefully drop it into the water. Once the candle floats, remove it from the water and light it.
