Updated on May 26, 2021

Are scented candles bad/toxic? It's a question that's been asked before. In fact, many people are unaware that burning candles in the house is one of the commonest causes of indoor pollution in the UK.

Most people don't realize the extent to which they are polluting the air with toxic fumes and particulates. The truth is that as well as the candle itself emitting fumes, the wicks are also releasing chemicals into the air you breathe in.

The world of candle production is constantly evolving and with this, new types of candles are emerging. No sooner than a new wax type is found to be toxic or dangerous, it is taken off the shelves and replaced with a safer alternative.

Not all candles are created equal and the burning habits of the user play a part in the safety of their chosen fragrance.

Tips for safer candles and fragrance

An average UK house contains three liters of gas, and a lit candle is estimated to consume around 600-800g of it. For sake of comparison, that's around the same volume of gas as three takeaway pizzas and a lit incense stick.

This means that three candles (even low-energy ones) are likely to burn around the same amount of gas as a whole bag of charcoal briquettes. In other words, a candle is likely to be a lot safer than a briquette.

We are, of course, aware that candles and other fragrance products are dangerous to use around children and pets. But it is important to remember that precautions can be taken to make candles and fragrances safer.

Choose high quality candles

There are plenty of things that can go wrong with candles, from health hazards to the spread of disease and fire. The best way to stay safe is to make sure that the wax is pure and from a reputable supplier.

Choose a candle that uses 100% food grade wax for the most safe and effective burns (such as vegan candles). You can also check the labels of scented candles to see what additives it may contain. The best ones are natural, organic and completely free from additives.

For years high quality candles have been available for the discerning consumer. In the past, however, candles were generally made from inferior wax, often with a poor fragrance.

However, the recent emergence of high-quality candles dedicated to certain effects has enabled candle manufacturers to make candles that produce superior scents. Candle manufacturers are now producing candles that not only smell great, but sell well too.

Tocca candles are a range of luxury candles (think big, billowing tapers) made by the Italian company Tocca.

With a rich history that dates back to the 16th century, the brand has become synonymous with excellence and luxury in the luxury candle industry, but the brand is also known, and loved, for the quality of its design as well as the quality of its products.

Tocca candles are made in the same factory that makes Alessi and Zaha Hadid lamps. Produced in Italy, they have been created for the past 60 years by Tocca.

The company's first candle was released in 1959 and has been going strong ever since. These days, Tocca candles are still made in Italy and are made by hand in the factory that was started in the 1950s.

Tocca candles are made in a glasswork studio in the second floor of a building in the center of Pescara.

The best waxes are made of soy wax, which is not made from any of the harmful materials and is the best way to keep your home safe from the dangers of fire and candle wax.

Often, candle-makers don't give a lot of thought to the wicks in their candles. They use whatever is cheapest, and often, wicks that contain additives and fillers that they don't necessarily have to pay for.

Worse, some of these additives and fillers can be potentially harmful to your health, as well as that of your family. If you will use disposable candles, there is no need to look too hard for a 100% cotton wicks candle.

The wicks in these candles are made from 100% pure cotton, which makes them much safer to use.

When I first started making candles, I was surprised by the impressive array of scents I could find. Essential oils are pretty pricey, but when you use them to make candles there are so many ways to make them last longer.

I'll tell you how to make candles that are beautifully scented and last much longer than any store-bought candles. And they are much safer to use.

The unique and personal nature of candles, is that they can be made in every possible shape and size, and in many colors and styles to suit your mood and your color scheme. They can also be made to be special and personal to you.

If you want to make a candle for a special event, then you can make it in the shape of a heart, as a symbol of love. Or if you want to make a candle for a special person, then you can make it in the shape of their name, or a phrase that means something to you.

Then you can add a scented oil, and burn it in a special way, such as with a flickering or a slow light to make it look all pretty.

Toxic. Seriously. If you have ever purchased a colored candle, then you have probably seen the warning that states that the colored candle will affect your health.

This is because the dyes used to color the candles are known to be toxic. While the warnings do make sense, it's definitely good to know if you can avoid using them.

It sounds strange but the dye used to color the candles is made from petroleum, so if you burn them, they can be toxic to your health. This is because the dyes are stored in the dyes that are used in the candles.

The other reason that colored candles are dangerous is because the dyes are known to cause allergies.
